Troubleshooting Instance Creation Failure in VMware and KVM Environments

Instance creation from the Glance image library on a VMware environment can fail if the IP address assigned to the VMware vSphere gateway appliance (gateway appliance) connecting to the Platform9 control plane (control plane) changes from that which was registered in the Keystone catalog for the image service.

A different IP address may be assigned to the gateway appliance if the gateway appliance restarts or the lease is renewed.

As the gateway appliance hosts the Glance Image Library (Image Library), the IP address of the Image Library endpoint must be updated to reflect the changed IP address of the gateway appliance, so that the Image Library is accessible and instances can be created by accessing the respective images from the Image Library.

Similarly, instance creation fails in a KVM environment if the Image Library host is configured using DHCP, and the IP address changes when the lease is renewed.

Let us look at how we can update IP address to the Glance image library endpoint in each of these scenarios.

Updating IP address of Glance Image Library endpoint in VMware environment

If you are using VMware as your hypervisor, wait for 30-60 seconds if the gateway appliance has just restarted.

Once the appliance has reconnected to the control plane, follow the steps given below.

  1. Navigate to Infrastructure and click Manage VMware Gateway. Manage vmware gateway
  2. Select the Configure Gateway option from the Actions drop down under Current Authorized Gateway. Configure vmware gateway
  3. Click Image Library tab and select the access point for Image Library access from the available list of options. Select the updated IP address. Reset gateway IP
  4. Click Update Image Library.

The Image Library settings are updated successfully and you can create instances from the images in the Image Library.

Updating IP address of Glance Image Library endpoint in KVM environment

If you are using KVM as your hypervisor, wait for 30-60 seconds after a restart of the Image Library host.

Once the connection with the control plane has been reestablished, follow the steps given below.

  1. Navigate to Infrastructure>Hosts. hosts
  2. Select the Host machine that hosts the Image Library from the list of hosts. Configure host
  3. Click Image Library tab and select the access point for Image Library access from the available list of options. Select the updated IP address. Reset IP
  4. Click Update Image Library details.

The Image Library settings are updated successfully and you can create instances from the images in the Image Library.
