Overview

This tutorial reviews different storage options available in Private Cloud Director, and the use cases for each.

PCD Storage Options At A Glance

There are currently two storage options available in Private Cloud Director: ephemeral storage & block storage.

Ephemeral Storage

This is the default Private Cloud Director storage option used for creating VMs. Virtual machines are typically created with at least one ephemeral disk which is used to run the VM guest operating system and boot partition.

An ephemeral disk is deleted when the virtual machine is deleted.

Block Storage

Block storage support in Private Cloud Director enables use of persistent block storage volumes with virtual machines. This is the most popular and recommended way configure storage for your production virtual machines. Block storage volumes persist even when the VMs they are attached to are deleted.
